A controversial house plan in Hampshire has been approved and it will pave the way for a new swimming pool, allotments, as well as sports pitches.
At Fareham Borough Council, planning bosses unanimously agreed to build 160 new houses at Sarisbury Green.
Attracting more than 50 letters of objection, the plan has residents raising concerns about the strain that the new houses will put on local roads as well as schools and other services.
Sean Woodward, council leader, said he was “delighted”
Because it meant that land would be handed over to the council for public open space and community facilities, the housing plan has been approved.
Miller Homes developers have built 160 new homes at Coldeast already; the location of a former NHS hospital that closed back in 2005.
Their latest application was for 40 “sheltered accommodation flats” as well as another 160 homes.
The builder was also given permission to transform the Manor House, the derelict stately home at the site, into a 27-room hotel with functional facilities.
Sports pitches, a community pavilion, allotments, a cemetery, and a swimming pool were given outline planning permission.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Councillor Woodward.
“It’s something that’s concerned me for all of my 27 years as a councillor and I think we have got the absolutely best possible outcome. Over the years there have been lots of different planning applications to get houses on it, including plans from John Prescott to put a couple of thousands on there and we resisted. What we have ended up with is a development which has produced a lot of community facilities and a large amount of open space and woodland which we will preserve.
“There’s a huge amount of benefits going to be coming to the local community from the Coldeast site and the majority of the site will become public open space and community facilities.”
